What is Rotational Molding?
Rotational molding (referred to as rotomolding) is an advanced manufacturing process used for making hollow plastic parts and products. The hollow parts are produced by filling a pre-constructed closed mold with powder polymer (plastic) material. The mold is then heated and rotated along two axes; the hot mold melts the polymer while the rotation forces the resulting liquid resin to take the shape of the mold. The hot mold is then cooled as it continues to rotate; this cooling process creates an even coating of cured plastic along the inside of the mold walls.
When everything is melted, rotated, cooled, and cured, the result is a single, seamless, hardened piece that can act as a stand-alone product or a supporting component for something more complex.
The Benefits of Rotomolding
- Relatively inexpensive
- Capable of making complex shapes
- Single-piece product design — no seams
- Pressure-free manufacturing process — no high-pressure hydraulic equipment is used
- Increased durability — consistency across wall thicknesses with thicker corners
- Production flexibility — molded-in threads, handles, hardware inserts, logos, wording, textures, and colors are all possible
- Corrosion and chemical-resistant
- Limited material waste
Custom Rotational Molding (Rotomolding)
- Custom rotomolding of high appearance, tight tolerance parts is truly our specialty. It is what we do day in and day out at our facility in Swanville, Minnesota. With nearly two decades of experience and FSP M-80 ATI Machines, we have the workforce and capabilities needed to produce your unique plastic parts.
- At Bakko Industries Rotomolding our shop currently features machines with ovens ranging in size up to 88 inches. Our custom rotational molding capabilities allow us to create a wide variety of products to meet your exact resin type, size, thickness, color, and quantity specifications.
